Pharmacy education in India, the courses offered by Indian institutes

The most popular career choices during my last years of School education, in the late 1980s, were becoming an engineer or a doctor. Everyone would ask,

"You want to be an Engineer or a Doctor ?"

There were very few other career options to consider, so our school days were all about becoming one of these two professions.

Of course, parents also frequently offered the third option, which was, "If you can't be a doctor or an engineer, we'll open a Kirana shop for you."  That was the most beneficial and sought after business in those days 😊

There was no mention of a career in pharmacy, but I consider myself fortunate that someone informed my parents about it, as it led me to Bangalore in 1990 to begin my Pharmacy program (Karnataka was regarded as a hub for pharmaceutical education institutions back then).

I say I am fortunate because India was a net importer of pharmaceuticals until 1987–1988. However, in 1990, things changed dramatically, and India became a major exporter of generic drugs to the world. By 1994–1995, India's exports had increased tenfold to US$504 million compared to US$219 million in imports, creating a US$285 million trade surplus. The growth of the pharmaceutical industry was aided by government support for PSUs (Public Sector Units).

An important turning point in the history of the Indian pharmaceutical industry was the 1995 implementation of the TRIPS (Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Right) agreement. As you have already read in my previous blog, this resulted in the reintroduction of product patents, and the journey that followed has been amazing.

Now is the ideal moment to become a part of the great, noble, and growing Indian pharmaceutical industry, which is expected to grow significantly in the years to come.

Even though many of you reading this blog are already working in the pharmaceutical industry and are part of this incredible journey, there are still opportunities for growth available for you in this field.

So, take your time and read this blog, where I'll discuss the different courses that are offered in India to help you progress and build a successful career in this field. Please share this blog with everyone who is trying to find the right course and career for themselves and their loved ones.
